About the Foundation Course
The course aims to develop understanding of psychoanalytic thinking and practice. The Foundation course will be taught over ten Saturdays, one per month, commencing in October 2023. The days will run from 10am to 6.30pm (with breaks) and will comprise three seminars as well as an experiential group.
- The Foundation course can be taken in its own right as a means of learning about psychoanalytic work and how it may enhance personal and/or work experiences across a range of contexts
- The Foundation course is a pre-requisite for application to the Clinical Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy (with exemptions when applicants have completed an equivalent course)

Seminar themes
The seminars aim to explore a wide of themes, with each Saturday focusing on a single theme. The seminars will explore how the unconscious manifests itself in everyday life, how consciousness develops, and how these issues come into play in the psychotherapy consulting room.
There is one written optional assignment towards the end of the course (although this assignment is compulsory for those who wish to progress to the clinical training).
Students on the foundation course are required to be in weekly personal psychotherapy with an Apptraining approved therapist for the duration of the course.
The fee for the course commencing October 2023 is £1788 (reviewed annually). There is an application fee of £75. Selection is on the basis of the application form, written personal statement and interview.
The closing date for applications is 30th June 2023 or earlier if the course is full. Applications are dealt with on a first come first served basis.
