Mourning's Dissonance: Who am I Who Mourns and Whom do I Mourn? presented by Mary Lynne Ellis
Mourning’s Dissonance: Who am I Who Mourns
and Whom do I Mourn?
Presented by
Mary Lynne Ellis
In this presentation Mary Lynne Ellis will explore new possibilities of interpreting experiences of bereavement. She will focus on the shifting identities of the mourner and the mourned and the relations between them. She will discuss Freud and Klein’s contributions in the light of contemporary literary/autobiographical writing (Colm Tóibín) and phenomenological and post-modernist philosophers (Merleau-Ponty, Barthes, and Judith Butler). Her perspective emphasizes the importance of attending in the psychoanalytic relationship to the embodied uniqueness of individuals’ conscious and unconscious languages of mourning. She will explore how these are shaped by gender, race, class, sexuality, age, and physical ability within particular socio-cultural contexts.
The presentation will be followed by a short showing of photographs on power point from Mary Lynne’s exhibition Empty Shoes, Lost Ground.
